How do I get started with John Jay or with classes?
Getting started with John Jay is easy. Just call the Student Services Advisor at the John Jay Center 260-729-5525 Extension 223 or email info@johnjaycenter.com to schedule an appointment for a consultation. The meetings usually last ½ hour, and you will receive both program and registration information. Information from the Student Services Advisor is available on individual classes, certificates, and degree programs available from Ivy Tech Community College and Indiana Wesleyan University.
Am I getting a “real” degree at John Jay?
YES! Classes, degrees, and certificates available through the John Jay Center will be awarded by Indiana Wesleyan University, Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana, or Jay County High School which are all accredited schools.
Can I take classes with John Jay that transfer to other schools?
College classes taken at the John Jay Center are through accredited schools which can be transferred to most other Indiana universities and colleges as well as many colleges outside of Indiana. The Student Services Advisor can help you with details about the transferring process.
Will my advisor be helpful and accessible?
The John Jay Center Student Services Advisor is available during normal business hours Monday- Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm. They are knowledgeable about all the different services offered through John Jay and will go beyond what you may expect to help you acquire the information you need. Will I feel comfortable at John Jay?
John Jay Center, conveniently located in downtown Portland, strives to provide an easily accessible location for many facets of education for our community. If you are working on completing your high school education or wish to enroll in college classes we want you to feel comfortable from the beginning with your one-on-one experience with our advisor or as a student attending one of our classes. How does John Jay help me with financial aid or grant opportunities?
The Student Services Advisor at the John Jay Center can provide information to prospective students on how they might best finance their education. Assistance is also available on how to complete financial aid applications (FAFSA) and how to apply for student loans.
Are there Job Placement Opportunities?
At the current time, John Jay Center does not directly offer job placement; however, John Jay has community partners who offer help with job placement such as WorkOne, R & R Employment, and the Jay County Chamber of Commerce. John Jay Center also has partnerships with businesses and industries in the surrounding area to help build bridges for future employment opportunities.
Can I take all my classes locally?
Absolutely. This is what it is all about! John Jay Center wants to be your local connection if you need to finish your high school education or for higher education. Many classes are offered here at the center, and others can be taken online. Thanks to the Ball Brothers Foundation, we also offer new video-conferencing equipment which can connect our students here in Jay County to college classes almost anywhere. The most important part of John Jay is to be the central location for getting you enrolled and guiding you through the completion of your education no matter where the classes are held.
Are there online classes available with John Jay?
Yes. Depending on the class and the semester, some classes are available online. Your advisor can help you find which classes are online and how these can be accessed through our computer lab or in the privacy of your own home. Also, John Jay would like to be your testing center for the online classes. Tests can be scheduled and administered right here at John Jay Center in Portland.
How soon can I get started?
You can start immediately. Just call or email the John Jay Center to make your consultation appointment so we can help you get enrolled in whatever program you would like. We also invite you to stop in to the John Jay Center during business hours and our friendly staff will get you started or give you a campus tour.
